Hello, I'm Tequila.
I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, where I experienced a cycle of unhealed trauma. Growing up, I endured neglect, abandonment, sexual molestation, emotional and verbal abuse, and at times, physical abuse. These experiences forced me to mature quickly, taking responsibility for others at a young age, even before I understood how to care for myself. In response to this pain, I suppressed my emotions and distanced myself from the feelings attached to my trauma, becoming emotionally detached. For a long time, these emotions felt nonexistent—until they resurfaced.
I was deprived of a true sense of family and did not experience its benefits until I created one of my own. My journey included advocating and caring for my mother, who lives with untreated paranoid schizophrenia. Navigating these family circumstances required strength and resilience as I managed responsibilities that came with caring for a loved one facing significant mental health challenges. In addition, I learned to advocate for my daughter’s disabilities within the school system and the community—an experience that proved both challenging and rewarding.
My experience as a military spouse and volunteer for the Ohio National Guard Family Readiness Group spanned several years and provided me with a unique perspective on the challenges faced by soldiers and their families. Through this role, I gained a deeper understanding of the complexities and hardships that arise before, during, and after deployment. Volunteering not only allowed me to witness these obstacles firsthand but also led me to confront and navigate similar difficulties within my own life. This experience further enriched my ability to empathize with military families and recognize the resilience required to overcome such adversities.
Throughout the challenges I faced, my spiritual connection with God became a vital source of strength. This relationship was instrumental in helping me navigate periods of heightened anxiety and moments of depression, as well as the constant demands that came with living in survival mode. I came to recognize that my desire to connect with others often stemmed from a need to fill a void, which sometimes led me into unhealthy relationships.
As time passed, I learned important lessons about self-love and acceptance. I began to appreciate who I am and found a sense of contentment within myself. This journey allowed me to see myself more clearly and to value the insights gained from my traumatic and other life experiences. These lessons have not only enabled me to survive but have also empowered me to grow into the woman I am today and truly thrive.
